The Slocomb Red Tops were the most common school mentioned by readers in reaction to Al.com’s list last week of the greatest team nicknames in Alabama high schools. AL.com named the Highland Home Flying Squadron as the best high school nickname in the state. The list also included the Percy Julian Phoenix, the Orange Beach Makos, the Spanish Fort Toros, the Arab Knight, the Gulf Shores Dolphins and the Paul Bryant Stampede.

SYNOPSIS – Showers and thunderstorms have stayed fairly scattered each afternoon to kick off the work week, but expect to see the coverage of rain take a noticeable step up into this afternoon. Better Gulf moisture and the very slow arrival of a front will help to bring more of an increase of showers and storms into the region today, then gradually drier air starts to filter in and bring down those rain chances to close out the work week. We’ll still see some showers and storms into the weekend, but it’ll look a lot more like our typical summertime pattern where most cells will be few and far between. That will help temperatures turn a little warmer as well.
