BMW's redesigned X2 compact SUV is more affordable than you might think

BMW has completely redesigned the popular X2 compact SUV for the 2024 model year, enhancing the small crossover's "fastback coupe" styling. I've previously noted that these slope-backed crossovers have more appeal to buyers who want the SUV's all-weather capability, but don't necessarily like the square box design that most SUVs use.

The thing to remember about the X2 is that first and foremost, this is a BMW, so performance is at the heart of the vehicle's personality. Like most automakers, BMW has gone to a high-output two-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine for most of its smaller vehicles. This engine puts out an impressive 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Paired with a seven-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission, the X2 is well balanced against its 3,803-pound curb weight, and offers brisk performance while still returning up to 33 mpg fuel economy on the highway.

Inside, the X2 offers a typical BMW interior. You will know you're in a sport SUV from the moment you open the door. The quilted seats are comfortable but still well-bolstered for spirited driving, and all controls fall easily to hand. BMW has adopted the "single pane of glass" across the dashboard for the driver information display and the infotainment system. As you would expect, both Apple and Android phone integration is supported.

BMW is one of those automakers that make a la carte buying easy with a whole range of option packages instead of different trim levels, allowing you to configure the X2 to your liking. Our test vehicle came equipped with the $1,700 driving assistance pro package, including active driving assistance, adaptive cruise control, lane change assist with collision avoidance, and a traffic jam assistant. We also enjoyed the M Sport Package which costs $2,500 and includes items such as 19-inch wheels, adaptive suspension, the 7-speed transmission, sport seats, and a bunch of other sport features. There was also a $4,000 premium package, which buys you the panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon audio system, wireless device charging, and other nice features. Also, heated front seats and steering wheel cost $550.

If I was spending my own money on an SUV to use in Portland, I would definitely buy the heated seats and steering wheel, but not the driver assistance package. The M Sport package is also worth buying, because it's a bargain if you like a sportier vehicle. I would not buy the Premium Package, primarily because I don't care for a sunroof, as they tend to leak as vehicles age. With that in mind, I could design a luxurious and sporty X2 and still keep the final price tag under $50,000.

On the road, the X2 is very much a BMW, and with the M Sport package, this is one small SUV that can satisfy your sports car cravings. BMW started off as a small car manufacturer, and it's much easier to make a small car that's enjoyable to drive. The BMW X2 offers a great value in the luxury-performance segment and much more for your dollar than the larger X4 or X6 fastback SUVs from BMW. You can see the fresh 2024 X2 at any local BMW dealer, and compare for yourself.
