ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Another notable person who had the disease was theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking.

Fundraising happens year round toward a cure, but there are special community events as well. So, the Columbia community is nearing the date for its Walk to End ALS starting 10 a.m. Oct. 12 from Cosmo-Bethel Park, 4500 Bethel St. Check-in starts at 9 a.m.

Hundreds are expected to rally together for the walk, where some who walk have a family member with ALS or just are there to support the cause.

"Our Walk to Defeat ALS events bring the ALS community together, providing hope and inspiration for those impacted by ALS. Thanks to your generosity and support, we can fund global research, nationwide advocacy efforts, and local care services. All of these efforts are critical to making ALS livable until we can find a cure," said Calaneet Balas, president and CEO of the ALS Association.

Some who are diagnosed with ALS only live for another two to five years.

There still is a chance to preregister for the event. Visit www.als.org/WalkColumbia to register or even just to make a donation. Registered participants who raise $100 or more receive a commemorative T-shirt.
