    Sports Recap: Columbia Heights synchro teams make state, Blaine tennis finishes at 7AA runner-up, Andover and St. Francis softball to section finals

    Columbia Heights synchronized swim had three routines qualify for the state meet: Lilam Taly Palma in Short Solo; Simone Edstrom, Cheirdi McClellan and Sage Dalzell in Short Trio; and Genevieve DuRose, Katelynn Hackett, Liliam Taly Palma, Sage Dalzell, Cheirdi McClellan, Simone Edstrom and Sheryn Narvaez Piza in Short Team.

    Girls golf

    The Northwest Suburban Conference season concluded May 24, with Totino-Grace finishing as the season runner-up, Andover earning fifth, Spring Lake Park earning seventh, Blaine earning ninth, Anoka earning 11th and Coon Rapids earning 14th.

    Earning All-NWSC honors from the area were Totino-Grace’s Caylin Cantwell in second place, Totino-Grace’s Kaitlyn Burstad in eighth, Totino-Grace’s Grace Raich in 11th, Andover’s Anneka Voerding in 12th, Andover’s Audrey Swenson in 13th, Spring Lake Park’s Grace Johnson in 22nd, Spring Lake Park’s Brooke Goerish in 23rd, Blaine’s Brooklyn Bauer in 25th and Anoka’s Lindsey Cerisier in 26th.

    Area section golf tournaments were scheduled for May 29-June 4.

    State tournaments are June 11-12.

    Boys tennis

    Blaine finished as the runner-up in the Section 7AA team tournament, defeating Cambridge-Isanti 4-3 in the semifinals in Duluth May 28, before falling 5-1 to Elk River in the ensuing championship match. The Bengals finished the season with a 19-3 record. The Bengals’ Grayson Dunigan earned third place in singles competition in the 7AA individual tournament, with teammate Logan Lunseth reaching the quarterfinals. Anoka’s Ethan Lam also reached the quarterfinals. St. Francis’ Otto Netteberg, Anoka’s Sam Coombe, and Andover’s Isaiah Rubin and Charlie Amundson reached the second round. In doubles play, Blaine’s teams of Griffin Dunigan/A.J. Fedor and Peter Andrews/Noah Meyers reached the quarterfinals. Reaching the second round were Anoka’s Ayden Boehlke/Solomin Theisen and Andover’s Landon Fogarty/Christian Guenther.

    Coon Rapids’ Ryder Held and Cooper Held reached the second round of the Section 5AA singles tournament, and the Cardinals’ teams of Blake Degrote/Nikolais Hirsimaki and William Wagner/Austin Hacker reached the second round in doubles.

    In Section 4AA, Spring Lake Park’s Lucas Clauson and Tanner Hunt, and Columbia Heights’ Youdahe Asfaw reached the second round in singles.

    In Section 6A, Totino-Grace’s doubles team of Aidan Raddohl/Gustavo Faleiros-Barbosa finished in fourth place. Fridley’s Obadiah Rich/Nathan DeBoer reached the quarterfinals in doubles, and Jacob Tiessen reached the quarterfinals in singles.

    Softball

    St. Francis topped Delano 6-5 in the Section 5AAA semifinals May 28, earning a spot in the championship round, scheduled for May 30. The Saints opened the playoffs with wins of 1-0 over Zimmerman May 22, and 5-1 over Monticello May 23, with Sydney Borchert only allowing five hits combined in back-to-back complete-game victories.

    Andover defeated Blaine 11-6 in the Section 7AAAA elimination bracket finals May 28, earning a spot in the championship round against Forest Lake May 30. Chloe Brown and Alexandra Kostecka homered for Andover in the game, and Addison Winter, Maia Johnson and Laci Heppell all doubled and combined to drive in five.

    Blaine shut out Coon Rapids 3-0 in the elimination bracket semifinals May 28. The Cardinals earned wins of 11-3 over Duluth East and 9-7 over Anoka May 25, while Anoka won its first-round game 7-6 over Cambridge-Isanti May 22.

    PACT reached the Section 4A elimination bracket final before falling 4-3 against Braham May 28. The Panthers won their first two games of the playoffs, 13-2 over Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City May 22, and 7-1 over Braham May 23, before falling in their final two games. The Panthers finish the season 12-6.

    Spring Lake Park finished 14-8 after falling 2-0 against Centennial in the Section 5AAAA elimination bracket quarterfinals.

    Baseball

    Andover earned the No. 1 seed in the Section 7AAAA tournament, which was scheduled to start May 29. Coon Rapids earned the No. 2 seed, Blaine the No. 6 seed and Anoka the No. 7 seed.

    Top-seeded Totino-Grace won its Section 5AAA opener 17-0 over Zimmerman May 28, and was scheduled to face St. Francis in the second round May 30 after the Saints took their postseason opener 4-3 over Monticello.

    Spring Lake Park and Park Center/Columbia Heights/Maranatha fell in the first round of the Section 5AAAA tournament, and were slated to play in the elimination bracket first round May 30.

    Legacy Christian Academy advanced to the Section 4A semifinals via wins of 8-3 over Trinity/Unity May 23, and 2-1 over Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City May 28. PACT won its Section 4A playoff opener 6-2 over Sciences and Agriculture May 22, before falling in its final two games.

    Boys lacrosse

    Andover earned the No. 1 seed in the Section 7A tournament, and was scheduled to face Anoka in the quarterfinals May 30 after the Tornadoes topped Chisago Lakes 10-9 in the first round May 28. Blaine defeated Spring Lake Park/Coon Rapids 18-4 in the first round May 28, advancing to play Duluth in the quarterfinals May 30. The semifinals are June 4, and the championship is June 6.
