Columbia Parks and Recreation continues trail cleanup after flooding

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia Parks and Recreation announced and update of trail clean up progress in a Friday Facebook post.

This repair process is following the extreme rain and weather earlier this month that impacted Mid-Missouri. Nature paths across Columbia are facing flooding, potholes and uneven paths.

On Bear Creek Trail, there was so much disrupted gravel that paths had divots about 3 inches deep, revealing the large base rocks underneath the trail.

Avid cyclist and owner of Fleet Feet running store, Nancy Yeager, suspects the deep divots were caused by bike riders.

"When the trails are that wet we don't want to go and create those ruts that you see when people ride their bikes and it's wet or even running can cause some ruts in there too," Yeager said.

While uneven gravel seems like a minor issue, it can become a hazard to anyone on the trail, from a seasoned biker to a casual walker.

"People get injured all the time on the on the trails around here, I hear from people, like even when the acorns are out or or the crab apples, people get hurt that way too," Yeager said. "So we want to have them as nice and level as we can.

Columbia Parks and Recreation's Facebook Post includes updates on five different trails with each description including where the obstruction is, how it's being fixed, and how trail users should handle the path.

There is no timeline for how long cleanup will take. However, Columbia Parks and Recreation thanks the community for their patience in this stage and they will continue to post updates on the status of the trails.
