COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCBD) — The Riverbanks Zoo and Garden has announced the loss of their beloved giraffe, Charlie, who died earlier this week.

Zoo officials said Charlie had been suffering from ongoing health concerns and a declining response to treatment.

“When visiting the giraffe feeding platform, Charlie never failed to delight guests with his grace, charm, and love for lettuce. Serving as a wonderful ambassador for his species,” Riverbanks Zoo posted to social media.

Charlie has fathered seven calves, many have gone on to have calves of their own. Officials say this emphasizes Charlie’s impact on the Species Survival Plans set forth by The Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Riverbanks Zoo extended their condolences via social media to the Animal Care staff during this time.
