One person dead, another in custody following shooting on Columbia’s Garners Ferry

One man is dead and another is in custody following a Thursday night shooting at an apartment complex off Garners Ferry Road.

Columbia Police Department said on social media site X (formerly Twitter) that officers were called at about 8 p.m. Thursday to the Garners Crossing Apartments at 7651 Garners Ferry Road in reference to a shooting. When they got there, officers found an injured man.

Police Deputy Chief Melron Kelly told The State that the man died on the scene. The Richland County Coroner’s Office had not announced the man’s identity as of early Friday morning.

Kelly said Pedro Leon Rodriguez, 50, has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in connection with the case.
