COLUMBUS, Ga. ( WRBL ) — Wednesday afternoon, the newest Columbus councilor was sworn in at the Government Center.

Chief Superior Court Judge Art Smith and Probate Judge Marc D’Antonio swore in real estate broker and nonprofit executive Travis Chambers for District 10 post. The ceremony began just past 3:30 p.m.

State law and the city charter require both swearing-ins because a city councilor is also a county commissioner in the Columbus Consolidated Government.

Chambers will replace John House, who resigned last year. He was elected to fill the expired seat. Chambers takes his seat on council immediately.

The new District 10 councilor takes his seat after defeating John Anker in a runoff last month.

Addressing the packed courtroom for the first time as a councilor, Chambers got emotional as he called the moment “bittersweet.”

Chambers said he had lost close friends over the course of the race for his seat. He was grateful for the support of family and friends, many of whom were in the courtroom for the ceremony.

In his remarks, Chambers took time to thank nearly every person in the room, including his wife Kia and his two sons.

Chambers vowed to make the city proud.
