COLUMBUS, Ga. ( WRBL ) — Democratic state lawmakers and citizens gathered to support the opening of a new Biden-Harris campaign office on Macon Road, Thursday evening.

The event saw many Democratic state representatives make an appearance including State Representative Teddy Reese, Congressman Stanford Bishop, Jr.

Reese says this campaign office serves as a reminder that the Biden administration has not forgotten the people of Columbus.

“Well, one thing this headquarters is going to show the people of West central Georgia that the Biden Harris campaign, they hadn’t forgotten about us from four years ago when we worked very hard to get them elected,” said Reese. “We had record turnout here in Columbus and in west central Georgia some of our outer counties, and we’re looking for them to come out again to help us reelect President Biden and Vice President Harris.”

Senator Bishop, Jr. used his speech to express unity among the people of Columbus.

“We’re going to make sure that we save our democracy. We don’t want a dictatorship. We don’t want retribution. We’re not trying to get revenge. We’re trying to have a better life for everybody.”

The opening of the headquarters falls on the final day of the Republican National Convention and amidst turmoil in the Biden campaign. In addition to the opposition from the newly minted Trump-Vance campaign, some high level Democrats have asked president Biden to consider stepping down.

While the event celebrated the establishment of a new Democratic headquarters here in Columbus, it also served as a platform for representatives to express support for the Biden-Harris campaign.

“That’s what’s so unique about this race. We don’t have two guys just promising to do work. We have records that we can examine. And when you examine those two records side by side, it’s very clear that the Biden administration has been amazing for America. It has been amazing for Georgia. It’s been outstanding for Columbus. The money that we were able to get here to help us recover from the pandemic, the great work that was done in conjunction with our leaders on the federal level, we’re inside excited. The energy is still up and we’re going to take this election.”

The Democratic party will vote for its presidential and vice presidential nominees at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Aug. 19.
