The way you throw out household waste in Columbus is changing. What to know

Columbus Consolidated Government will soon change how it picks up household waste.

Beginning Sept. 9, all household waste must be placed outside in a city issued black or brown cart.

Any waste not placed in one of these city issued carts will require a citizen to call 311 for a scheduled pickup, according to a news CCG release. Scheduled pickups may occur on the same day as your household collection day or on a different day.

This change will eliminate the need for a second truck with a driver and two inmates to follow the automated side loading truck to collect ground trash the automated truck is unable to collect, officials said.

The change will also allow the drivers of the second truck to return to waste collection and eliminate waste collection drivers working 10 hours a day for six days a week.

“Our current collection system is inefficient, expensive and exhausting for our waste collection operators,” the release said.

“This new policy/collection process will help with retention, will allow our Waste Collection division to implement the best industry standard for waste collection that is used in progressive cities across the country, reduce excessive overtime expense, and will allow our operators to spend more time with their families.”

There is no change to the existing yard waste policy, but officials said yard waste pick up will return to a customer’s normal day effective Sept. 9.

Residents with an original collection day of Monday or Tuesday can expect a return to Monday or Tuesday pick up with no Wednesday collection, according to the release

Residents with an original collection day of Thursday or Friday can expect a return to Thursday or Friday pick up with no Saturday collection, according to the release.
