Five of the 27 Ohio companies that cracked the 2024 Fortune 500 are based in the Columbus area, and we also boast one of the biggest companies in all of America.
Why it matters: Central Ohio benefits greatly from being home to these economic anchors, which bring new jobs that spur our ongoing population growth .
State of play: Cardinal Health is Ohio's largest company, ranked No. 14 in the U.S. with over $205 billion in revenue last fiscal year. It was also 14th last year.
- The Dublin-based drug and medical supply distributor is building a 350,000-square-foot warehouse near Rickenbacker International Airport.
- The company says it should be open by next summer and will create around 100 new jobs.
By the numbers: Nationwide is the next biggest in our region at No. 75 (up from 88 last year), though the company recently made headlines for dropping insurance coverage for thousands of family pets.
- It's trailed by American Electric Power (217), Huntington Bank (375) and Bath and Body Works (481).
Zoom out: Findlay's Marathon Petroleum and Cincinnati's Kroger both snuck in the top 25, while other notable Ohio companies include Procter & Gamble (50), Progressive (62) and Sherwin-Williams (176).
- The new Sherwin-Williams corporate headquarters on Cleveland's Public Square is expected to open next year and will be the city's fourth-tallest skyscraper.
The intrigue: J.M. Smucker and its empire of frozen PBJ sandwiches made the list again at 446.
- The Orrville-based company sold $800 million in Uncrustables sandwiches last fiscal year and set a goal to reach the $1 billion mark by FY 2026.
- A four-count box of two-ounce sandwiches retails at Kroger for $4.99.
- That means a billion dollar's worth of Uncrustables would weigh 50,100 tons — around five times heavier than the Eiffel Tower .
