A bat-eared fox named Bruce who lived at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has died.

Bruce, named after Batman character Bruce Wayne, was one of the zoo’s “most photogenic and beloved animals for guest engagement,” according to a Columbus Zoo Facebook post.

The fox, a member of an African species, was a part of Jack Hanna’s Animal Encounters Village, an area that offers zoo visitor a chance to interact with wildlife. The post said his "playful spirit" made his part in the village unforgettable.

The zoo’s conservation medicine and animal care teams worked to manage Bruce’s long-term health conditions, but recent blood work showed a decline. The teams determined the best course of action was euthanasia as continued medical management was no longer possible.

The Facebook post said the fox had many nicknames including Brucie, Boots, Boy and Brother.

“Bruce's legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of meeting him. He was a friend, an ambassador, and a joy to be around,” the zoo said in the post. “We will miss you dearly, Bruce.”
