COLUMBUS , Ohio ( WCMH ) – A “cherished” bat-eared fox at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium has died.

Bruce, also known as Brucie, Boots, Boy and Brother, was euthanized after his health deteriorated, the Columbus Zoo announced Friday. The animal, named after Batman alter-ego Bruce Wayne, captured the hearts of everyone he encountered, according to the zoo.

The 5-year-old bat-eared fox faced long-term health issues, and the zoo said blood work from a recent routine exam revealed his condition had gotten worse.

The Conservation Medical and Animal Care teams realized that continued medical treatment was “no longer possible” and made the decision to euthanize Bruce. The bat-eared fox typically lives about six to 14 years in captivity, according to the African Wildlife Foundation.

The zoo described Bruce, who resided in the Adventure Cove region, as having a “playful spirit” and “unique personality.”

“We will forever miss his joyful zoomies, his endearing smile with those tiny teeth, his excitement for finding crickets, and his peaceful sunbathing moments with his sister,” the zoo wrote in a social media post. “He was a master at scent marking, a true star in training sessions, and one of our most photogenic and beloved animals for guest engagement.”

The zoo lost another bat-eared fox , 4-year-old Ivy, earlier this year, who was also euthanized after facing health issues. Ivy and Bruce arrived at the zoo together in 2019.
