‘Bark Bash’ to replace this year’s WAG Fest following cancellation

HILLIARD, Ohio ( WCMH ) – Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks announced it will hold its first “Bark Bash” event, featuring canine vendors and paddle boarding, following the cancellation of WAG Fest.

Metro Parks will now hold its own dog-themed event dubbed “Bark Bash” on the same day and at the same location where WAG Fest typically takes place. Bark Bash will be held on Aug. 24 at the Darby Bend Lakes area of Prairie Oaks Metro Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“We were sad to hear WAG Fest was canceled and knew the dogs and people of Franklin County would miss the fun,” Metro Parks Executive Director Tim Moloney said.  “By providing an alternative event, it allows us to build upon the success of our previous events while embracing a fresh approach that aligns more closely with our mission to provide memorable experiences for our community and their canine companions.”

WAG Fest, an annual central Ohio event that is one of the largest dog festivals in the country, announced on July 8 that this year’s event was canceled due to “unforeseen circumstances .”

“The organizers examined several different avenues to allow the festival to continue,” organizers wrote in a statement. “Options were exhausted and it became impossible to put on the first-rate event central Ohioans expect under these current circumstances.  This was not an easy decision, and organizers are very sorry for any inconvenience this causes.”

The new event will feature canine and food vendors, rescue organizations and humane societies. Metro Parks Outdoor Adventure will host stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking for attendees and their dogs. Owners will also be able to customize a tie-dye bandana for their canine. The park has trails for walking, a lake for dogs to swim in and an “ice castle” for cooling off.

Admission to Bark Bash is free. All dogs must be on a leash unless in specified off-leash areas, Metro Parks stated. Attendees are encouraged to bring water and waste bags. Potential vendors may email specialevents@metroparks.net to participate.

The organizers of WAG Fest did not specify when the next event would be held, but a spokesperson with Metro Parks told NBC4 they plan to host an annual dog-focused event – whether that remains Bark Bash or goes back to WAG Fest is still uncertain.
