    This week's been filled with sticky weather and rainy skies, but don't let the harsh summer sun stop you from enjoying all that the Central Ohio region has to offer.

    This week and next, tunes of diverse genres will fill venues, concert halls and theaters all across the region, from Chris Stapleton and Lyle Lovett's twangy hits, smooth jazz and cocktails at the Lincoln Theatre, mascara-smudging emo music at the Sad Summer Festival, booming EDM music from Marshmello and PinkPantheress, to calming classical music at the Columbus Commons presented by singer-songwriter Cody Fry.

    A Tribe for Jazz brings a summer of free jazz

    As part of its 2024 Columbus International Jazz Series, A Tribe for Jazz is presenting two concerts this month. Up first is artist-in-residence and globally known upright bass player George Delancey, whose early years were spent with Columbus Youth Jazz. He will perform at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Columbus Dance Theatre, 592 E. Main St.

    At 7 p.m. on Saturday, classically trained vibraphonist Chien Chien Lu and R&B-funk bassist Richie Goods will bring their collaborative project, "Connected," to the Joseph V. Canzani Center at Columbus College of Art & Design, 60 Cleveland Ave.

    Chris Stapleton brings the 'All-American Road Show' to town

    On Friday, the Kentucky-native country musician will be making a stop at the Schottenstein Center, 555 Borror Drive, for his tour, "All-American Road Show."

    But this isn't the artist's first time visiting the city. Last year, the artist, along with a stacked lineup of country musicians, took to the stage at Ohio Stadium for the Buckeye Country Superfest . Off the stage, Stapleton is also a prolific songwriter whose writing credits appear on hits for artists including Kenny Chesney, George Strait, Luke Bryan, Adele, Kelly Clarkson and Taylor Swift.

    Tickets can be purchased online at ticketmaster.com and prices start at $179. The show begins at 7 p.m.

    Get swingin' n' shakin' with the Whirlybirds

    Saturday is Swingin' n' Shakin' night at Natalie's Grandview, 945 King Ave., as Whirlybirds take Charlie's Stage for an evening of original swing music, Dixieland and big band-era tunes. Doors open at 5 and the show starts at 5:15 p.m.

    Hailing from Columbus, Whirlybirds is made up of longtime musicians with a diverse array of backgrounds including jazz, funk, R&B and punk rock. This "Happening Hour" show is free and tips will be appreciated. Reservations, which you can make at nataliesgrandview.com , are encouraged.

    Picnic with the Pops presents a father-son orchestral collaboration

    Conducted by his father, orchestral composer Gary Fry, singer-songwriter Cody Fry will perform at the Columbus Symphony's Nationwide Picnic with the Pops concert at 8 p.m. on Saturday at John F. Wolfe Columbus Commons, 160 S. High St.

    Cody drew national attention on the 14th season of "American Idol" by making it to the top 48. He was nominated for a Grammy in 2021 in the "Best Arrangement, Instrumental and Vocals" category for his cover of the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby."

    General-admission lawn seating is $35 for ages 13 and older, $10 for ages 3 to 12 and free for ages 2 and younger. Table seats also are available.     Sad Summer Festival set to bring emo hits to Columbus

    The fifth anniversary of Sad Summer Festival will feature founders Mayday Parade and The Maine with a lineup of seven other bands beginning at 1 p.m. on July 24 at KEMBA Live!, 405 Neil Ave.

    Originally launched in 2019 by artists and industry members lamenting the loss of the long-running Vans Warped Tour, Sad Summer can give audiences a more intimate experience than most festivals, with one stage and a smaller curated lineup.

    Tickets are available for purchase online at sadsummerfest.com . Standard tickets are $55 and VIP tickets cost $125.

    Musical power couple to present brass tunes

    This Saturday, kick back and relax for an evening of soft brass tunes spanning genres from American standards to Brazilian jazz at the Southern Theatre, 21 E. Main St., brought by husband-and-wife musicians, trumpeter Herb Alpert and vocalist Lani Hall. The show is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.

    The couple's show will also include an interactive element, where audiences will be able to ask questions and the duo can recall tales about their musical journeys with stories, photos, videos and memorabilia from throughout their decades-long career.

    Both artists have led exciting and recognized careers. As the leader of Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass, Alpert is co-founder of the independent record label A&M Records and the winner of nine Grammy Awards. Hall, formerly the lead singer of Brasil 66 with Sergio Mendes, has two Grammys, is a prolific singer of more than 22 albums including the title song to the James Bond film "Never Say Never Again."

    Ohio University Lancaster presents 'Beauty and the Beast'

    On Sunday, Ohio University Lancaster is premiering its production of the classic Disney musical "Beauty and the Beast." Get immersed in the whimsical fairy tale world with familiar tunes to enjoy a tale of self love and acceptance.

    The performance will take place at the Wagner Theatre, 1570 Granville Pike, this Sunday at 2 p.m., though the show will have six showtimes until Sunday, Aug. 4.

    Marshmello and PinkPantheress headline MLS All-Star Concert

    This Sunday, get ready to bust out your best dance moves for the MLS All-Star Concert, featuring EDM artist Marshmello and viral genre-crossing musician PinkPantheress. The concert, taking place at Nationwide Arena, 200 W. Nationwide Blvd., is the kickoff to a week of programming leading up to the MLS All-Star Game on July 24 at Lower.com Field, home of the 2023 MLS Cup champs, the Columbus Crew.

    Tickets start at $35 and are available to purchase online at ticketmaster.com . Proceeds from ticket sales benefit Neighborhood Athletics , a local nonprofit that helps provide athletic and educational opportunities to youth in underserved communities. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

    Some jazz and cocktails with guitarist Kevin Turner

    Next week's Wine Down Wednesday on July 24 will feature Kevin Turner, a jazz guitarist and writer, producer and educator for Ohio State University's jazz program, at the Lincoln Theatre. The Wine Down Wednesday concert series brings live performances from Columbus' jazz talent to the Michael B. Coleman rooftop patio for an evening of hors d'oeuvres and a specially curated wine or specialty cocktail.

    Tickets to Wine Down Wednesdays at the Lincoln Theatre, 769 E. Long St., are $32 and can be purchased in-person at the CBUSArts Ticket Center, 39 E. State St., online at lincolntheatrecolumbus.com or by phone at (614) 469-0939. A limited number of VIP packages are available for each show, as well.     Lyle Lovett to bring country classics to Newport

    On Wednesday, July 24, the American singer, songwriter and actor Lyle Lovett is coming to Newport Music Hall, 1722 N. High St. A prolific artist, Lovett has more than a dozen albums and four Grammys under his belt. Next Wednesday, he'll be taking the stage with his 13-piece band for a night of country music.

    Tickets are available for purchase at axs.com/events/540131/lyle-lovett-and-his-large-band-tickets , and prices range from $39.50 for advanced general admission, $44.50 for day-of general admission and $94.50 for platinum seating. The performance will begin at 7 p.m.
