Can Ryan Day boost this one key Ohio State Buckeyes 2025 recruiting ranking over an SEC rival?

The Ohio State Buckeyes are off to a hot start in the 2025 recruiting class, boating 23 commitments thus far. Head coach Ryan Day has done an excellent job continuing to pump talent into the program. However, despite Day's efforts, Ohio State trails LSU in one key recruiting metric.

Ohio State Buckeyes Trail LSU in Recruiting Metric

The Ohio State 2025 recruiting class is impressive, ranking first or second across most industry big boards. With three consensus 5-star recruits, 15 4-stars, and five 3-stars, the Buckeyes are in the mid-90s for overall recruiting score. For example, On3 has the Buckeyes second behind Alabama in total score, as they trail by one 5-star.

The more notable area where Ohio State isn't quite No. 1 yet is the average rating per commitment. The Buckeyes are barely ahead of Oregon, with an average rating of 92.39 per recruit set to be on campus in 2025. That's impressive for 23 additions.

However, it trails LSU's mark of 92.49 for 17 commitments. This is a surprise given LSU's relative lack of on-field success, and it's still early in the tenure of Brian Kelly.

The rest of the top 10 aren't too surprising. The gap between LSU, Ohio State, and Oregon is tiny. There's then a drop to Alabama, Georgia, Florida State, and Clemson. Finally, there's Michigan, Texas A&M, and Texas.

The inclusion of Clemson with 13 recruits likely won't last as they fill out their class with depth pieces. Dabo Swinney doesn't believe in the transfer portal like a fool, so he'll be forced to take whatever local 3-stars who aren't turned off by the program's downward trajectory.

For Day and the Buckeyes, this just might not be a class that earns them the top billing. It may not matter, but it's not an accident they're behind the one team with a higher-rated QB prospect than their own Tavien St. Clair.

Ohio State Buckeyes 2025 Recruiting Class Overview

On January 6, during the All-American Bowl, the 2025 class's premier cornerback, Devin Sanchez, announced his commitment to Ohio State. He is recognized as a 5-Star Plus+ recruit, a distinction he shares with other commits such as Tavien St. Clair, the quarterback from Bellefontaine, Ohio, and Na’eem Offord, a cornerback from Parker High School in Birmingham, Alabama.

Ohio State's recruitment success continued earlier this month with the addition of Riley Pettijohn, an elite linebacker from McKinney, Texas, who also ranks in the top 100. He joins a group of top prospects, including Carter Lowe, an offensive tackle from Whitmer High School in Toledo; Faheem Delane, a safety from Good Counsel High School in Olney, Maryland; Quincy Porter, a wide receiver from Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, New Jersey; Zahir Mathis, an EDGE from Imhotep Institute in Philadelphia; Tarvos Alford, a linebacker from Vero Beach High School in Port Saint Lucie, Florida; and Bo Jackson, an athlete from Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School in Cleveland.
