COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) – The child who was the subject of an Ohio Amber Alert has been safely recovered.

A four-year-old child was last seen early Friday morning in west Columbus, in the area of Wedgewood Drive and Eakin Road of the Holly Hill neighborhood. He was recovered in the 600 block of Dexter Avenue, less than a mile from the Wedgewood Apartments.

The Amber Alert text message said the 4-year-old’s mother and a friend were the two suspects. Misdemeanor criminal charges have been filed against both adults.

Sgt. James Fuqua said that the child was taken away in a vehicle, though about 11:15 a.m., the suspects called police and turned themselves in.

Police were alerted between 3 and 5 a.m. by child’s father, Fuqua said, and the father alleged earlier domestic abuse incidents between the mother and her son that he hadn’t reported before. That led police to believe the boy could be in danger and issue the Amber Alert.

A criminal complaint filed by police also stated the father accused the mother of assaulting him at 3:49 a.m. Friday morning. The accusation was corroborated by a witness.

The initial alert was sent out by Columbus police just after 9 a.m. Fuqua said the outages with Microsoft and CrowdStrike prevented the state from issuing an Amber Alert for this child, but at 10 a.m., the statewide alert was officially issued.

Fuqua said in an 11 a.m. update that several tips had come been received that officers were investigating.
