Columbus Dispatch journalists won 27 awards Sunday in Ohio's most competitive journalism contest, including top honors for general excellence.

Dispatch.com earned second place for best digital presence while sweeping all three awards for best video in the large-market division in the 2023 Ohio Associated Press Managing Editor contest announced at Villa Milano in Columbus.

The Dispatch's special 2023 report "Under Fire: 80 hours of Gun Violence" earned multiple first-place awards for best public service, best video and best full-page design.

"Preying on Patients" by Reporter Max Filby and former colleagues Jennifer Smola Shaffer and Mike Wagner won first place for investigative reporting. The investigation found the State Medical Board of Ohio failed to protect Ohioans from serial sexual abusers and harassers despite a clear, decades-long pattern of doctors preying on patients. Managing Editor Encarnacion Pyle led the project.

The USA TODAY Ohio Network's October investigation "Chaos In Ohio’s Youth Lockups" won second place for investigative reporting featuring work from The Dispatch, Cincinnati Enquirer, Akron Beacon Journal and Canton Repository. The series chronicled significant problems impacting juveniles locked up by the Ohio Department of Youth Services.

Opinion & Engagement Editor Amelia Robinson won first-place honors for both editorial writing and best columnist, while photographer/videographer Adam Cairns also earned two first-place awards.

"These well-deserved honors highlight the incredibly important local journalism our team produces every day to serve Columbus and all of Ohio," said Dispatch Executive Editor Michael Shearer, who joined the newspaper in January. "Many of these stories would not be told if not for the work of our amazing and dedicated professionals."
