Ryan Day has lost just eight games since he became the head coach at Ohio State in 2019 and he is entering his biggest season yet.

Expectations are once again the same for the Buckeyes, competing for a National Championship . Though, this team has more experience than you will usually see in Columbus and the bar very well should be to win it all.

One of the more experienced players on the roster is defensive end Jack Sawyer, who was the first player to commit to Day and the Buckeyes back in the 2021 class. If he had the chance to do it all over again, nothing would change for the Pickerington, Ohio native.

“I think coach Day is the only coach I’d want to play for in college football, I’d commit to him a hundred times over if I could,” Sawyer said at Big Ten Media Day on Tuesday. “So that’s why, when we talk about coming back, a lot of us have felt like we’re his first real recruiting class. And we kind of all felt like we let him down in a sense of not reaching the goals that we set out to do when we signed our name on the dotted line. Going through the things we’ve gone through the past few years with coach Day definitely feels like we’ve gone through them hand in hand.”

Sawyer is now a senior for the Buckeyes, as is his running mate J.T. Tuimoloau at the other defensive end spot. Through three seasons with the Buckeyes, Sawyer had 14 sacks and is coming off his best season yet where he had 6.5 sacks and 48 tackles. Coming back to Columbus for another season, the senior has a chance to raise his draft stock even more.

By the time his career is over, Sawyer could play as many as 55 games for the Buckeyes. That is a ton of college football played for the 22-year-old. By the sound of Sawyer speaking on his time in Columbus, he wouldn’t rather spend that many games in any other uniform.

The Buckeyes have a chance to do something very special during the 2024 season when it is all said and done. If they are going to reach the big goal, it is going to take a strong season from the defense that has the capabilities to be the top in the country. Sawyer will play right into that.
