Staff profile: Meet The Columbus Dispatch's Kyle Robertson, photo editor

Position

Photo editor of The Columbus Dispatch and Dispatch.com. I joined the paper in 2006 as a photography intern, then from 2006-2022 I was full-time staff photographer. I started to take over as photo editor in the fall of 2022.

Why I went into journalism?

I went into photojournalism because I wanted my photos to tell a story. I believe at times photos can tell a story better than words. We document the world around us, which makes us historians.

Why photography?

Photography plays an important role in today's news cycle. Photos can either be stand-alone images offering insight into a specific story or accompany an article to provide more context.

What I like best about my role

As an editor, my job is to make sure the best photos are displayed online and in print by The Dispatch's very talented photographers. Every day is a different day, and there is always news to cover.

About my mentors

When I first started at the Dispatch, I was lucky enough to have some great photographers on staff as mentors. Learning from former photographers Chris Russell, Eric Albrecht and Neal C. Lauron, I watched the three of them cover every aspect of an assignment and come up with the most creative photos day in and day out.

Favorite assignments?

I have a couple. I was fortunate enough to cover the 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers championship run with sports reporter Adam Jardy. We covered all the home games in Cleveland and also made the trip out west for Game 7 at Oracle Arena. I also have covered all three Columbus Crew MLS championship games in 2008, 2020 and 2023. I also covered the Ohio State Buckeyes football team during its 2014 championship run.

A little more about me?

I live and grew up in Hilliard: Go Davidson Wildcats. I married my kindergarten sweetheart. I spend all my free time at an ice rink, soccer field or the baseball field watching my two boys play. I am also a big fan of Eric Church. I first saw him at Whiskey Dick’s in Reynoldsburg in 2008 with 150 fans.
