The Ohio State football program is one of the most esteemed in the country and head coach Ryan Day has led the Buckeyes to a 46-8 record since taking over for Urban Meyer in 2018. However, Day has fallen short of his ultimate goal of winning a championship and his program has lost to archrival Michigan the last three seasons. The Wolverines went on to win a national championship last year, but the door is open for a strong season from Ohio State after head coach Jim Harbaugh and starting quarterback J.J. McCarthy both left Ann Arbor this offseason.
The Buckeyes began practice this week and important newcomers will try to make an impression during Ohio State football fall camp. Former UCLA and Oregon head coach Chip Kelly takes the reins offensively and will have former Kansas State quarterback Will Howard and the No. 1 overall recruit in the Class of 2024, Jeremiah Smith, at his disposal. After six seasons as the head coach at UCLA , including three consecutive seasons with eight wins or more from 2021-2023, Chip Kelly made the surprising decision to leave the Bruins to become the offensive coordinator at Ohio State. Now he'll look to install his up-tempo brand of offense in Columbus and take advantage of dynamic playmakers like freshman Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate .
Another major storyline for Buckeyes football entering Ohio State training camp will be a potentially dominant unit in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Three Ohio State football players were named to the preseason watch list for the Outland Trophy, which is awarded to the best interior lineman in the country each year.
Offensive tackle Josh Fryar, guard Donovan Jackson and defensive tackle Tyleik Williams were among the 75 players pegged among the nation's best this preseason. Both Fryar and Jackson started on the offensive line all season while Williams broke through as a starter and finished with 10 tackles for loss. With Michigan dominating the conference of late by winning in the trenches, all three will be critical for Ohio State as they look to get back to the College Football Playoff this season.
