Columbus Zoo changes bag and cooler policies as it debuts new $1.4M security pavilion

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is changing its security measures as it unveils a new security pavilion this week.

The new Guest Entry Security Pavilion, opening Thursday, cost $1.4 million. It incorporates a new EVOLV security system, which is also in use at Zoombezi Bay.

So what changes are in store with the new system? One big one for guests: starting Thursday, the zoo will relax restrictions on the size of bags and wheeled items. Items flagged by the system may still undergo additional screening.

That said, coolers over 24 inches in length are no longer permitted inside the park. They can be stored in the new Cooler Cove outside the main entrance.

Smaller coolers can be brought into the zoo and stored at in-park Cooler Coves located near major attractions like Adventure Cove and Tiger Boardwalk. These coolers are subject to random searches.

"We are excited to introduce these enhancements to our entry process, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all our guests," a zoo spokesperson said. "Thank you to all our visitors for their support and understanding as we continue to improve our facilities."
