Ohio State began their fall camp on Thursday and that means we are that much closer to the 2024 college football season beginning.

With less than a month until the opening game against Akron, the Buckeyes have a few things to figure out. The biggest thing for the Buckeyes to figure out is who the starter at quarterback will be.

All signs point toward Will Howard being that guy for the Buckeyes, but he has not been named the starter through the spring or summer. On Thursday, head coach Ryan Day laid out a timetable for when he would like to have a starter named.

"How that shakes out, I'm hoping that happens in the first week to 10 days," said Day.

Ohio State went into fall camp last season before they named Kyle McCord the quarterback. Howard is expected to be the guy and is battling against junior Devin Brown, then freshmen Julian Sayin and Air Noland to a lesser extent.

"It has to happen,” said Day about when he would know. “You can't force it, but ideally, we'd like to have someone as a starter and go into the season and get going with that.”

Ohio State went out and got a graduate transfer from the transfer portal with starting experience. Howard’s ability to be a runner is a fit for the Buckeyes and he didn’t come to Columbus to do anything other than start for one season.

On the first day of camp, it appeared that Howard looked much better than he did in the spring off of what Day said . Which only makes sense with a few more months to get the system down.

"I thought there was more zip on the ball, and I thought there was more accuracy today," Day said. "For day one, I did notice that. Again, day one, what are you going to do on day one? But I thought the ball came out with more pace. I thought he had more discernment and I thought there were some accurate throws up there."

It sounds as if we could have a quarterback officially named the starter for the 2024 season by the second week of August if things go according to plan.
