COLUMBUS — Ohio State has 24 commits to its 2025 class. Is another on the way?

Three-star Newberry (Fla) defensive tackle Jarquez Carter committed to the Buckeyes in July and it’s been a bit of a drought since. Another key target is set to come off the board later on Saturday. Five-star Shaker Heights (Ohio) safety Trey McNutt will announce his commitment.

He was initially supposed to commit on July 19, but pushed back his plans to accommodate guests who would have been able to attend the ceremony.

McNutt is the No. 20 overall prospect and the No. 2 safety in the On3 Industry Rankings. On3 has McNutt as the No. 47 overall prospect and the No. 2 safety. Both metrics have McNutt as the No. 2 Ohio prospect behind five-star Plus+ Bellefontaine (Ohio) quarterback Tavien St. Clair .

Ohio State, Oregon, Florida, Texas A&M and USC are the finalists for McNutt.

Lettermen Row breaks things down one day ahead.

    Ohio State

Ohio State has always been an interesting program in this recruitment. The Buckeyes didn’t have much of a presence in this race during the fall. It wasn’t until Matt Guerrieri was hired in January that the Buckeyes started moving the needle. Guerrieri is a native of East Cleveland and the reliability between the two was the foundation for Ohio State.

McNutt had visited Ohio State a few times before Guerrieri was hired but made several visits afterward. He was on campus in January. He showed up a few times throughout the spring to see the Buckeyes’ spring practices.

But he never scheduled an official visit with the Buckeyes this summer. His recruitment took a heightened turn around the end of April. He took official visits to Oregon, Texas A&M, Florida and USC.

The communication between him and Ohio State never stopped, but McNutt has been very dedicated to finding the best place for him .

    Oregon

McNutt made his first visit to Oregon in February and seeing everything that Eugene had to offer changed things for him in his recruitment.

He made a return visit in April and then was on campus for his official visit June 21-23. The first prediction on the Ducks came in on June 25 from ScoopDuck Publisher Justin Hopkins who wrote this when publishing his pick.

“The Ducks have really cemented themselves as the team to beat here but the real question is now when will he commit? It could be soon or this Fall. If he waits we’ll have to see what happens. But if he commits soon, I think the call will be the Ducks.”

After Hopkins’ pick, an avalanche of predictions came in including one from On3’s Steve Wiltfong.

Oregon currently holds the No. 5 recruiting class in the On3 Team Industry Rankings and has commitments from two other Ohio State targets — WR Dakorien Moore and CB Dorian Brew .

    Final Call

Lettermen Row has reported for a while now that we don’t see Ohio State winning this one — at least now. McNutt, while an Ohio State legacy, has always marched to the beat of his own drum. He has done things his own way.

The predictions into the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine rolled in for a reason. Our final call has McNutt committing to the Ducks.
