Ohio State has big aspirations in 2024 with the roster that they have been able to build. Through the transfer portal and with what they had returned, the Buckeyes have a loaded roster on both sides of the football.

It is Emeka Egbuka, TreVeyon Henderson, Quinshon Judkins, Jeremiah Smith, and Will Howard being talked about the most on offense. One player who is very talented in his own right isn’t being talked about enough and he should be.

Wide receiver Carnell Tate is expected to be a major player at the position in his second season with the Buckeyes. While he had a small role as a freshman, Tate is set to take his game to the next step. Head coach Ryan Day gave a really good review of Tate and who he can be for Ohio State.

“The limit for Carnell is just through the roof,” Day said early in camp. “I don’t think there is a limit to what he can be. He’s not someone you typically hear but feel out there.”

Tate had 18 catches for 264 receiving yards and a touchdown. His best game came in Week 6 at Purdue when he caught three passes for 79 yards. The 6-foot-3 wideout has the route-running ability and size to be a major factor down the field for the Buckeyes. Tate was a five-star recruit in the class of 2023 and had to wait his turn due to a player like Marvin Harrison Jr. being on the team.

Emeka Egbuka is the leading returner in the room but Tate is the guy behind him that is expected to hold down that second receiver spot for the Buckeyes. Ohio State needs their next NFL talent to step up behind Egbuka and Tate should be a favorite to do so.

Guys like Brandon Inniss and freshman Jeremiah Smith are going to be pass catchers to pay attention to as well for Ohio State. The Buckeyes have a lot of hype around Smith and is deserving, but all of the talent around him is going to help him be the best player he can be.

It feels like Tate is being a bit slept on heading into the 2024 season because of the names around him. The former five-star recruit doesn’t have to wait long to remind people of what he can do.
