Ohio State has been a wide receiver factory as of late and has been able to put a plethora of wide receivers into the NFL. Not only have they been drafted into the NFL, but they have been successful too and it has helped Ohio State immensely when it comes to recruiting.

Every once in a while, a wideout’s time at Ohio State does not work out. We watched that exact thing unravel with former Buckeye wide receiver Jameson Williams, who transferred to Alabama after two seasons in Columbus. After going to Alabama, Williams’ production exploded and he turned into a first-round pick of the Detroit Lions .

Justin Fields, who was the wire rack at the time when Williams was in Columbus, opened up about that whole situation a bit on the St. Brown podcast.

"They were playing with Jamo. I'm not going to cap,” Fields recently said. “They were playing with Jamo. He's the run-off guy to get Garrett Wilson or Chris Olave open basically. He's the alert versus the quarters coverage or something like that. But they really weren't messing with Jamo, but I'm glad he left. And he went crazy at Bama."

As a freshman, Williams had six catches for 112 receiving yards and a touchdown. A year later, the speedy wideout had nine catches for 154 yards and two touchdowns. All it took for Williams was one season at Alabama to land on the NFL radar. In his junior season, Williams exploded for 1,572 yards and 15 touchdowns with the Crimson Tide.

It was Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave who were the focal point of that Ohio State passing attack during those seasons. Still, Williams was able to show off his speed at times and was able to impress Alabama enough to come after him.

Since being a first-round pick of the Lions, Williams’ time in the NFL has not worked all that well. His rookie season was cut short due to injury and he recorded 354 yards last season, as well as a pair of touchdowns. The 2024 season could be where Williams takes a leap.

Still, it is interesting to hear from the quarterback that was throwing him the ball in Columbus, on why things weren’t working out between Williams and Ohio State.
