Sterling Heights invites public to take traffic-related surveys
STERLING HEIGHTS — Some new surveys and an online mapping tool can help eventually make driving, biking or walking safer in Sterling Heights, according to city officials. The city wants residents and businesses — including drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, mass transit users and more — to visit a new website that has a traffic-related safety survey and more.

Incumbent Lenox Township Supervisor Anthony Reeder Jr. is facing opposition in the Aug. 6 primary election. Reeder, a Republican, is being challenged by Scott Clifford, a Republican and current township trustee. Fraser gets new full-time clerk
FRASER — Fraser has a new clerk, but its last one isn’t going anywhere. August Gitschlag was sworn in as Fraser’s new clerk at the City Council’s June 13 meeting. Cindi Greenia has stepped down to deputy clerk. Gitschlag said this arrangement helped for an easy transition.
5K for firefighters set for Family Day in New Haven
Families and firefighters will come together in New Haven on Aug. 10, when Haven Place will host its annual free Family Day event downtown. Family Day will get bigger and better this year, said Haven Place CEO Tina Nagy, with more added to traditional activities such as kids entertainment and a 5K as well as another fundraiser for firefighters.

A $9.7 million, 15-month renovation of O’Dowd Hall was unveiled last week at Oakland University. NILES — John Russell Lawyer of Niles passed away at 9:04 p.m. Thursday, July 11, 2024, at the Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township, Michigan. He was 89 years-old. John was born Sept. 1, 1934, in Youngstown, the son of the late Donald C. and Hazel Mae Wylam Lawyer.

Troy educator selected for 2024 C-SPAN Teacher Fellowship
Ryan Werenka, a teacher at Troy High School, was selected as one of five educators in C-SPAN’s 2024 Teacher Fellowship program for a third consecutive year. Werenka is once again collaborating with C-SPAN’s Education Relations team during the month of July, to expand digital resources for C-SPAN Classroom. Eastpointe man gets four years in fatal Detroit drunk driving crash
An Eastpointe man was ordered to serve four to 15 years in prison for causing the death of a man in a traffic crash on the east side of Detroit on New Year’s Eve morning. De-L Alekshay-Makalo Wesley, 49, received the sentence last Friday from Judge Kiefer Cox of Wayne Court Circuit Court in Detroit for the death of Dylan Bradford, 27, of Detroit, in a crash on Hayes Road four blocks north of Houston-Whittier. The incident also injured Christian Peoples, 35, of Inkster, according to court records.
