Did you know Powerhouse Gym was founded in Michigan? Brothers William and Norman Dabish opened the first Powerhouse Gym in Highland Park in 1974. At the time, the gym was nothing more than a place for people in the neighborhood to exercise. They promoted the gym as a place you could go for boxing, bodybuilding, karate, and kung fu.

Fraser gets new full-time clerk

Eastpointe man gets four years in fatal Detroit drunk driving crash
An Eastpointe man was ordered to serve four to 15 years in prison for causing the death of a man in a traffic crash on the east side of Detroit on New Year’s Eve morning. De-L Alekshay-Makalo Wesley, 49, received the sentence last Friday from Judge Kiefer Cox of Wayne Court Circuit Court in Detroit for the death of Dylan Bradford, 27, of Detroit, in a crash on Hayes Road four blocks north of Houston-Whittier. The incident also injured Christian Peoples, 35, of Inkster, according to court records.
Troy educator selected for 2024 C-SPAN Teacher Fellowship
Ryan Werenka, a teacher at Troy High School, was selected as one of five educators in C-SPAN’s 2024 Teacher Fellowship program for a third consecutive year. Werenka is once again collaborating with C-SPAN’s Education Relations team during the month of July, to expand digital resources for C-SPAN Classroom. C-SPAN Classroom provides middle and high school teachers with video-based content including lesson plans and more.

A Macomb County man has claimed the Michigan Lottery's largest Fantasy 5 prize after buying tickets for the game every day. The 56-year-old man, who chose to remain anonymous, won $963,040 in a drawing after purchasing a ticket at Smoker's Express in New Baltimore, state lottery officials said in a Wednesday press release.
4 arrested in smuggling attempt on St. Clair River
U.S. Border Patrol agents recently arrested four people illegally crossing the Canada border near Michigan on a boat, federal officials reported. On June 25, agents from the Marysville Border Patrol Station spotted the boat landing on the U.S. shoreline of the St. Clair River after starting in Canadian waters, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency announced in a Tuesday press release.
Oakland University names new dean of medical school
A $9.7 million, 15-month renovation of O’Dowd Hall was unveiled last week at Oakland University. Dr. Christopher Carpenter, the new dean of OU’s William Beaumont School of Medicine, was on hand at the ribbon cutting to reopen the renovated building that houses the medical school, offices for faculty and staff and registrar.
