COMBES, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Rio Grandy Valley cities are reporting a higher influx of people begin sent to the hospital with bee-sting-related ailments. ValleyCentral spoke to a few local experts to see why this is and how you can prevent being attacked.

Walter Schumacher, founder of the American Honey Bee Protection Agency says the increase in bee swarms is due to the weather. He says the summer is usually when drier conditions mean there is less food for bees. However, because conditions in the Valley have remained wet and damp, bees still have ample food to continue stocking and building up their hive.

Schumacher says more bees outside means there are more protecting the hive.

Rene Perez, Registered Nurse Paramedic Director of Patient Transport Services for the South Texas Emergency Care Foundation, says there has been an increase in bee attack calls to 911.

He said on Tuesday about six patients required hospitalization after reporting they were stung by bees.

As for what to do if you are stung by a bee, those who are not allergic should remove the stinger using a credit card or similar object and apply cold to the affected area. Those who are allergic to bees should always carry and EPIPEN and self dose if necessary.

To prevent bee stings when faced with a swarm, Schumacher says there are a few signs that could save your life. If you realize that bees are bumping into you but not stinging you it could mean that an attack will ensue shortly after. When this happens, Schumacher advises the public to remain calm and slowly begin walking to a safe and secluded place where the insects cannot follow you.

He says it is important to not swat at the bees because bees become agitated with motion.
