“In a futuristic world that imposes a cosmetic surgery at 16, Tally is eager for her turn to join the rest of society,” reads the synopsis. “But when a friend runs away, Tally embarks on a journey to save her that upends everything she thought she wanted.”

The trailer brings viewers to a distant future where the government forces every one of its 16-year-old citizens to undergo plastic surgery in order to maintain its society’s standard of beauty. It introduces King as Tally, who joins a group of rebels called The Smokes who go up against the powerful people trying to control their bodies and lives.

Uglies is directed by McG (Charlie’s Angels, The Babysitter) from a screenplay written by Jacob Forman, Vanessa Taylor, and Whit Anderson. The film also stars Keith Powers (The Tomorrow War), Chase Stokes (Outer Banks), Brianne Tju (I Know What You Did Last Summer), Jan Luis Castellanos (The Runaways), Charmin Lee (The 5th Wave) and Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black). It is executive produced by King, Jamie King, Scott Westerfeld, John Fox, and Jenny Hink, with John Davis, Jordan Davis, Robyn Meisinger, McG, and Mary Viola set as producers.
