Last month, director Roland Emmerich surprised people by calling James Cameron overbearing in Emmerich’s attempt to remake the 1966 sci-fi film Fantastic Voyage. This week, Cameron responded to the filmmaker.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cameron was asked about the comments Emmerich made, specifically in calling Cameron overbearing. The legendary filmmaker said that he’d never had anything negative to say about Roland, but confirmed that he was overbearing, especially on a project he helped write.

“I’ve never said anything negative about Roland. But anyway: Yes, I’m overbearing. Damn right,” said Cameron. “When it’s a project where I’ve contributed to the writing, I might actually have an opinion on it. I actually don’t even remember talking to Roland Emmerich about Fantastic. I remember the other directors that we worked with for months on end trying to develop that project. If I talked to Roland, it was for two minutes. I have a pretty good memory and I don’t remember that at all.”

The director wouldn’t comment on whether or not the movie was still in development, however, choosing to move on in the interview.

What do we know about the Fantastic Voyage remake?

Fantastic Voyage is a 1966 sci-fi movie that starred Stephen Boyd and Raquel Welch. The movie was directed by Richard Fleischer and told the story of a submarine crew that was shrunken down and ventured into the body of a scientist to try and repair his brain.

James Cameron has long been interested in directing a remake of the film, and in 2007, 20th Century Fox began pre-production on the project with Emmerich set to direct. However, Emmerich would leave the project shortly after. Other directors rumored to have been interested in the project at one point included Shawn Levy, Paul Greengrass, and Guillermo del Toro.

As of this year, Cameron has said that he still plans to make the remake at some point, although it’s unclear if or when it will ever make its way out.
