Katy Perry‘s “Lifetimes” music video has stirred up unexpected controversy. Released only a few days ago, the video has now attracted scrutiny from environmental authorities, sparking an investigation. Now, fans and critics are curious about what happened.

Here is everything to know about why Perry’s “Lifetimes” music video is under investigation.

Why is Katy Perry’s ‘Lifetimes’ music video under investigation?

Katy Perry’s “Lifetimes” music video is currently under investigation by the environment department of the Balearic Islands. Nearly a week after the video was released, the department issued a press release on Tuesday, August 13. It states that the production company responsible for the music video did not secure the necessary authorization to film in the protected sand dunes of the Ses Salines Natural Park. The video, featuring Perry, includes scenes shot in the ecologically sensitive dune system of S’Espalmador. They are one of Formentera’s most important natural areas.

The environment department is investigating the potential environmental damage caused by the filming, as the area is reportedly protected and marked by rope to prevent access. While the filming is not considered a “crime against the environment,” it is deemed an infringement since video or photographic reports can be authorized through proper channels. The department’s press release emphasizes that proper permits were not obtained. This has now led to an inquiry into the environmental impact of the production. The investigation has attracted considerable attention, not only because of the video’s location but also due to the involvement of Katy Perry.

“Lifetimes” is the second single off Katy Perry’s forthcoming sixth album, 143. The track, produced by Dr. Luke, follows her earlier release, “Woman’s World.” The first single was released in July 2024 and received mostly lukewarm reviews. These singles are paving the way for Perry’s new album, 143. The album, the title of which is seemingly code for “I love you,” is set for release on September 20 via Capitol Records.
