Pacific Rim Origin Story Prequel TV Series Being Developed

A Pacific Rim origin story prequel series is being developed.

Pacific Rim was released in United States theaters in July 2013. Directed by Guillermo del Toro, the film starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, and more.

A sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising, followed in March 2018. Del Toro produced the film, while Steven S. DeKnight directed it. It starred John Boyega, Scott Eastwood, and Cailee Spaeny.

Per Variety, Eric Heisserer and Carmen Lewis are now developing a Pacific Rim origin story series.

Plot details remain under wraps at this time.

What else do we know about the Pacific Rim origin story prequel series?

The first Pacific Rim movie opened with exposition scenes explaining how Kaiju began emerging out of an interdimensional portal in the Pacific Ocean called ‘the Breach,’ leading humanity to build massive robots called Jaegers to fight them. The show could dive into this time period of the franchise’s history, though this has not been confirmed.

Additionally, it has been announced that Heisserer has entered into a first-look television deal with Legendary Entertainment, meaning that he and Lewis will continue to develop IP-driven projects for the company.

“Eric is a multitalented, prolific creator whose track record of critical and commercial successes speaks for itself,” said Legendary Television’s Jason Clodfelter. “We are thrilled to launch our partnership with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen, with a new entry in the epic, globally popular Pacific Rim universe. We are certain their vision will make for an enthralling expansion to Legendary’s beloved franchise.”

In addition to Pacific Rim and Pacific Rim uprising, there was also an anime series, Pacific Rim: The Black, that premiered on Netflix in March 2024. It lasted for two seasons, with Pacific Rim: The Black Season 2 having been released in April 2022.

There’s no word yet regarding casting information or a potential release date for the new Pacific Rim origin series that’s currently being developed.
