Ahead of the launch of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, a brief Season 3 update has made its way online. Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay were present during Season 2’s world premiere and spoke about several aspects, including a potential third season. Here’s everything they revealed.

The Rings of Power showrunners tease Season 3 and more

Spilling details about the latest season, Patrick McKay mentioned that after a “huge and epic” first season, they “got even more onscreen in season two.” They were hoping to leave the audience surprised by pushing “the show into new territory.”

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at London’s BFI Southbank, J.D. Payne further added that the audience “can expect it to go broader, deeper and bigger,” as Season 2 will go “into more worlds, more monsters, more battles.”

McKay did not share a lot when asked about whether Season 3 is happening. He said, “All we can say is, we’re working on it. We’re cooking. Let us cook!”

The two also spoke about their excitement for the upcoming Warner Bros. movie, Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which is slated to arrive in 2026 from director Andy Serkis. Speaking about the upcoming film, Payne said, “Middle-earth is vast, and we feel like there’s room for everyone on the table.” He added, “We love the Peter Jackson films, so I think we’ll be excited to see it as fans.”

The second season of Prime Video’s Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power begins streaming on August 29. As previously revealed, it will feature a grand battle sequence lasting multiple episodes.

Returning to Middle-earth are Morfydd Clark as Galadriel, Robert Aramayo as Elrond, Owain Arthur as Durin IV, Ismael Cruz Cordova as Arondir, and Ema Horvath as Earien. They will also be joined by Charlie Vickers’ Sauron.
