Rush Hour 4 is being pitched to studios; however, Brett Ratner ’s potential involvement in the movie is acting as a roadblock.

Thus far, there have been three films in the Rush Hour franchise, including 1998’s Rush Hour, 2001’s Rush Hour 2, and 2007’s Rush Hour 3. All three movies were directed by Ratner and star Jackie Chan as Chief Inspector Lee and Chris Tucker as Detective James Carter.

What is going on with Rush Hour 4?

While Ratner has previously discussed wanting to make Rush Hour 4, the director was accused of sexual misconduct by six different women in 2017. Ratner denied the allegations at the time but has not made a movie since 2014’s Hercules.

Warner Bros. ’ New Line Cinema division distributed all three of the Rush Hours movies. According to The Hollywood Reporter , however, Warner Bros. has allowed Rush Hour 4 to be licensed elsewhere. Tarak Ben Ammar currently retains the rights to make the movie under his Eagle Pictures banner and has since been looking for potential partners to work with. Arthur Sarkissian is attached to produce with Eagle Pictures, should the film be made.

Ratner’s involvement in a potential Rush Hour 4 appears to be a “nonstarter” for several studios, including Paramount and Sony. Lionsgate executives reportedly met to discuss working with Ben Ammar on Rush Hour 4 in July.

“In different times, it might seem like an attractive idea for Lionsgate — which has an interest in building franchises to complement its John Wick series — or any studio looking to capitalize on audience nostalgia with well-known IP,” The Hollywood Reporter’s article reads. “But doing the movie would mean potentially working with franchise filmmaker Brett Ratner, who, according to a source, was a part of the pitch as the project’s potential director and producer.”

Whether or not Ratner would actually be involved in a potential Rush Hour 4 seems to be unclear, as representatives for Ben Ammar denied Ratner’s attachment. When asked by The Hollywood Reporter about potentially returning to the franchise, Ratner said the question was filled with “gross inaccuracies” and didn’t provide any further comment.

Chan and Tucker are not officially attached to return to another Rush Hour film at this time, though both have previously expressed interest in doing so in the past.
