Francis Ford Coppola is planning on making two movies following Megalopolis , one of which he intends to fund with the box office earnings of the Adam Driver-starring epic.

Megalopolis releases in United States theaters this coming September from Lionsgate Films. The film is written and directed by Coppola, who spent approximately $120 million of his own money in order to get it made.

Speaking with Rolling Stone , Coppola was asked if Megalopolis would be his last movie or if he has plans to continue filmmaking beyond that.

“I’m working on two potential projects right now,” he answered. “One is a regular sort of movie that I’d like someone to finance and make in England, because I don’t have a big history with my wife in England. Everywhere else I go, I’m reminded of her all the time. The other is called Distant Vision , which is the story of three generations of an Italian American family like mine, but fictionalized, during which the phenomenon of television was invented. I would finance it with whatever Megalopolis does. I’ll want to do another roll of the dice with that one.”

Coppola is also known for making 1972’s The Godfather, 1974’s The Godfather Part II, 1979’s Apocalypse Now, 1983’s The Outsiders, 1986’s Peggy Sue Got Married, 1990’s The Godfather Part III, 19992’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and more.

When will Megalopolis be released in theaters?

Having premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, Megalopolis will be released in United States theaters on September 27, 2024.

“Megalopolis is a Roman Epic fable set in an imagined Modern America,” the synopsis for the movie reads. “The City of New Rome must change, causing conflict between Cesar Catilina, a genius artist who seeks to leap into a utopian, idealistic future, and his opposition, Mayor Franklyn Cicero, who remains committed to a regressive status quo, perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare. Torn between them is socialite Julia Cicero, the mayor’s daughter, whose love for Cesar has divided her loyalties, forcing her to discover what she truly believes humanity deserves.”

Along with Driver, the film stars Giancarlo Esposito, Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Jason Schwartzman, Kathryn Hunter, and more.
