Emma Roberts says it would be her dream to play Britney Spears in the recently announced biopic movie.

On August 1, 2024, it was announced that Spears’ 2023 memoir novel, The Woman in Me was being turned into a feature film for Universal Pictures. Jon M. Chu — known for helming 2018’s Crazy Rich Asians, 2021’s In the Heights, the upcoming Wicked adaptations, and more — has been tapped to direct the movie, while no casting announcements have yet been made.

Shortly after the announcement that the movie is in the works was made, Spears’ former longtime assistant, Felicia Culotta, told TMZ that she thinks Roberts would be a good choice to play the iconic singer.

What did Emma Roberts say about wanting to play Britney Spears?

Speaking with Cosmopolitan, Roberts was asked what she thought about the idea of playing Spears.

“I was like, I love her assistant. I mean, it’s my true dream to play Britney Spears,” she said. “It’s a rumor, but I hope maybe it’ll come true. I mean, I remember I locked myself in my room and listened to In the Zone and said, ‘I cannot leave this room until I memorize every word.’”

She added, “I mean, I sing Britney to my son in the bath all the time. I’m always like, ‘God, he must think I’m so weird.’ That’s some millennial parenting.”

Roberts is known for starring in American Horror Story and for playing Chanel Oberlin in Scream Queens. Her filmography includes 2006’s Aquamarine, 2007’s Nancy Drew, 2010’s Valentine’s Day, 2011’s Scream 4, 2013’s We’re the Millers, 2015’s The Blackcoat’s Daughter, 2016’s Nerve, 2020’s The Hunt, and 2024’s Madame Web, among other titles.

A release date for the Britney Spears movie has not been announced at this time. The film will be produced by Marc Platt.
