Camila Mendes will no longer be starring in the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot.

In February 2023, it was announced that a legacy sequel reboot to 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer. Mendes officially joined the cast alongside Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King in July 2024.

Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., both of whom starred in the original movie, are also in talks to reprise their roles.

Now, per Deadline, Mendes has dropped out of the movie.

Why did Camila Mendes drop out of the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot?

According to Deadline, Mendes dropped out of the project due to scheduling projects as she was recently cast in Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films’ Masters of the Universe movie. Mendes will play a warrior named Teela in the movie, while Nicholas Galitzine is playing He-Man.

Mendes is known for playing Veronica Lodge in Riverdale. She’s also starred in movies such as 2019’s The Perfect Date, 2019’s Coyote Lake, 2020’s Palm Springs, 2022’s Do Revenge, 2024’s Upgraded, and more.

The new I Know What You Did Last Summer movie — which will be the fourth film in the horror franchise following the original, 1998’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, and 2006’s I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (there was also a 2021 Amazon Studios television series) — is being directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.

The script was co-written by Robinson and Sam Lansky, while a previous draft was written by Leah McKendrick.

The still-untitled I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot is scheduled to be released in United States theaters on July 18, 2025.

Amazon’s new Masters of the Universe movie, meanwhile, is currently expected to hit theaters on June 5, 2026.
