ComingSoon can exclusively debut the trailer for Karaganda: Red Mafiya.

Karaganda: Red Mafiya is a new crime movie that is written and directed by Max Weissberg, who is the heir to New York’s Gramercy Park Hotel. The film will hold its United States premiere later this month at the Soho International Film Festival.

When is the premiere of Karaganda: Red Mafiya?

Karaganda: Red Mafiya’s United States premiere will be held at the Village East Angelika Cinema (181-189 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10003) at 4:30 p.m. on September 22, 2024, as part of the 15th annual Soho International Film Festival.

The movie stars Konstantin Lavysh (Power Book IV: Force) as Vladimir, Nikita Bogolyubov (Barry) as Aleksei, Dimiter D. Marinov (Green Book) as Vanya, Natasha Blasick (Paul T. Goldman) as Elena, Richie Stephens (Mayor of Kingston) as Lyosha, and Alexander Karavay (Unusual Suspects) as Monya.

“Set in the shadowy underworld of the Vory v Zakonye (Thieves-in-Law), an elite criminal organization with roots dating back to czarist Russia, the film follows Vladimir, a Russian gangster in the 1990s,” the synopsis reads. “After a violent shootout at a Russian airbase, he becomes embroiled in a deadly mafia war that forces him to confront an old friend from their time in Soviet prison camps. This encounter sets him on a harrowing journey to rescue his wife from within the brutal Soviet penal system.

Weissberg previously told part of Karaganda: Red Mafiya’s from a non-fiction perspective in the 2008 documentary Hotel Gramercy Park. It is also inspired by Weissberg’s 2014 short film Karaganda, which won five awards across 26 festivals.

“I’m thrilled to finally share this film with audiences after more than a decade of work,” said Weissberg. “With the current situation in the world, Karaganda: Red Mafiya has taken on a new relevance, making its US premiere at the Soho Film Festival even more meaningful.”

Weissberg produces the movie alongside Nina Gortinski and Edwin Mejia Jr., while Sameer Dua, Bryce Campbell, and Ego Mikitas serve as executive producers and George Hume and Gregory Oelke as co-producers.
