Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the much-anticipated sequel to the 1988 horror classic Beetlejuice, debuted in U.S. theaters on Friday, September 6, 2024. And now, the viewers want to know its ending. Thirty-six years after the original, Tim Burton, who also directed the first movie, takes the audience back to Winter River, Connecticut, for a new adventure revolving around the Deetz family. Lydia (Winona Ryder), now a parent herself, summons the eponymous trickster ghost/demon (Michael Keaton) to save her daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) and embarks on a journey in the Neitherworld.

Here is what happens to Lydia and Astrid at the end of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

What happens at the end of Beetlejuice 2 and does Lydia save Astrid?

The movie opens by setting up certain narrative points. Lydia’s former husband, Richard, is dead, and she is now in a relationship with a man named Rory. Her relationship with Astrid has become strained since Richard’s death, and Rory’s inclusion in Lydia’s life has only made the matter worse. Charles dies at the start of the movie, prompting the Deetz family to return to Winter River for the funeral. There, Astrid encounters a neighborhood boy named Jeremy and later discovers that he is a ghost. Jeremy claims that he can reunite Astrid with her father and convinces her to chant a spell from the Handbook for the Recently Deceased. However, the Deetz family discovers in the course of the movie that Jeremy has an ulterior motive. He wants to return to the mortal world and tricks Astrid into agreeing to a transaction that will result in her demise.

Having realized this, Lydia calls forth Betelgeuse (aka Beetlejuice) and agrees to marry him if he helps her save her daughter before she gets on the Soul Train and is lost forever. Meanwhile, Delores (Monica Bellucci), Betelgeuse’s vengeful former wife from the Black Plague era and a soul-sucking supernatural entity, searches for him.

Ultimately, Lydia saves Astrid from Jeremy. Betelgeuse sends Jeremy to a hell-like place, and Lydia and Astrid return to the mortal world with Richard’s help. When Betelgeuse arrives to collect his due during Rory and Lydia’s wedding, it is revealed that Rory only became involved with Lydia for her money. Astrid uses the Handbook to call forth a sandworm from Saturn, which devours Rory and Delores after the latter shows up at the wedding as well. Afterward, Astrid uses the Handbook to nullify Betegeuse’s contract with Lydia. Lydia subsequently banishes the trickster by saying his name thrice, leading to Betelgeuse bursting like a balloon.

While all this is happening with Lydia and Astrid, Delia dies of snake bites. She eventually reunites with Charles as they board the Soul Train together.

Who is Jeremy in Beetlejuice 2?

Jeremy is a charming boy Astrid meets in Winter River, who turns out to be a ghost later in the movie. As Lydia discovers, Jeremy murdered his parents 23 years before the events of the film. He was later inadvertently killed by police officers as they tried to arrest him.

What does Lydia’s dream mean at the end of Beetlejuice 2?

When the movie begins, Lydia hosts Ghost House, a supernatural talk show. She starts getting visions of Betelgeuse before actively summoning him to save her daughter. Toward the end of the movie, she ends Ghost House and goes on a trip to Dracula’s castle in Romania with Astrid. There, Astrid meets a boy named Vlad, and they eventually marry. However, when Astrid gives birth to their child, it turns out to be the Baby Betelgeuse.

Lydia wakes up from a nightmare to find Betelgeuse beside him. He claims that he had “the Weirdest dream,” and Lydia wakes up again. The entire sequence, including Astrid’s marriage, is likely part of Lydia’s elaborate dream. It seems to indicate that Betelgeuse might still be out there, despite what happened. And maybe he can return in a potential sequel.
