The status of Marvel StudiosArmor Wars has been mostly up in the air over the past few years, and in a recent interview, star Don Cheadle had a joking answer for any updates.

During a recent appearance on the Today Show, Cheadle was asked about what the status of Armor Wars was. Without hesitation, Cheadle jokingly answered back “what’s Armor Wars?” The star went on to say that, as per usual, he couldn’t say much about the project due to Marvel’s preference to keep things secretive.

What do we know about Armor Wars?

Originally announced back in 2020, Armor Wars was meant to be a Disney+ series that would adapt the iconic 1987 limited comic series of the same name. In 2022, however, the project was turned into a feature film, although Marvel Studios hasn’t offered up any official updates on the project since then.

Rumors on the status of Armor Wars have continued to swirl since 2022, with new reports noting that Marvel could be considering cancelling the project altogether. In an interview with GQ last year, Cheadle opened up about the project, and said that it would follow his character coming out of the shadow of Tony Stark.

“Hopefully the favorite one that I’m going to do is Rhodey movie that we’re going to shoot,” Cheadle said. “I think in every successive film, he’s coming more and more out of Tony’s shadow and becoming his own person but I still think we haven’t really figured out who he is and really dug into that so that’s what the movie is for. It was going to be a series, now we’re going to do it as a film. Armor Wars. So I’m looking forward to that.”

Originally written by David Michelinie and Bob Layton and running for seven issues from December 1987 to June 1988, the comic story centered on inventive genius Tony Stark as he discovers that the same top-secret tech he used to create the Iron Man armor is now in the hands of several deadly supervillains and is wracked with guilt over the evil they’ve done utilizing the suit. In the face of objections from his government, friends, colleagues, and fellow superheroes, Stark swears to use the power of Iron Man to bring this evil to an end and take back what’s his.
