Fans of Magic: The Gathering have long been waiting for the popular card game to be adapted to the screen. Their wishes seem to have been answered after Netflix announced an animated take on the game in 2019. Moreover, renowned actor Brandon Routh was roped in to voice Gideon Jura in the Magic: The Gathering series. The show was scheduled to premiere in 2022 but inadvertently got delayed. In a recent discussion, the Superman Returns star has come out to shed some light on the fate of the much-awaited series.

Brandon Routh says Netflix’s Magic: The Gathering series is ‘not happening’

As per Brandon Routh, Netflix’s Magic: The Gathering series has effectively been canceled.

The 44-year-old actor disclosed this discouraging update while promoting his upcoming film, Ick, in a discussion with Collider. “I’m not sure. I did do a voice for it. As far as I understand, nobody’s put out a press release about it, but apparently it’s not happening,” Routh stated. “That’s kind of old news. I’m not sure why it’s surfacing again.”

Brandon Routh was set to portray Gideon Jura, a noble Planeswalker, before Netflix’s Magic: The Gathering was canceled. Interestingly, the show had already been written and recorded before its unexpected termination. In a similar fashion, a big-screen adaptation of the game was also sanctioned in the past, with Bryan Cogman taking over the scripting responsibilities.

Nevertheless, the project was abandoned after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019. The now-axed series was originally intended to be produced by the Russo brothers before creative differences resulted in their departure. Jeff Kline of Transformers: Prime fame was subsequently recruited as the show’s new executive producer.

Nonetheless, the project has seemingly fallen victim to Netflix’s cost-cutting measures, causing it to be scrapped completely. As for Brandon Routh, the actor is currently occupied with promoting his upcoming horror comedy, Ick.
