Mexican actor Demián Bichir, arguably most known for his Academy Award-nominated outing in Chris Weitz’s A Better Life, has joined The Black Phone 2 cast. It is the highly-anticipated sequel to the 2021 supernatural horror movie The Black Phone, featuring Ethan Hawke as serial child abductor and murderer, the Grabber.

Horror movie veteran Demián Bichir joins Ethan Hawke for The Black Phone 2

Demián Bichir, whose filmography includes horror flicks such as The Nun (2018) and The Grudge (2020), has joined the cast of The Black Phone 2.

As reported by Deadline, Bichir will appear alongside several returning cast members, including Hawke. Scott Derrickson, who co-wrote and directed the first movie, worked together with his writing partner C. Robert Cargill on the sequel as well. He is also taking the director’s chair for the project.

The Black Phone takes place in North Denver, Colorado, in 1978, and revolves around siblings Finney (Mason Thames) and Gwen (Madeleine McGraw). After the Grabber abducts Finney, the latter finds the eponymous phone which he learns can help speak to the Grabber’s past victims. As Finney tries to find a way to escape, Gwen starts to have dreams about her brother’s abduction.

The film’s cast also includes Jeremy Davies as Terrence and Miguel Mora as Robin. All four actors are all set to return for the sequel. Derrickson and Cargill developed the script for the first movie from the namesake short story by American author Joe Hill, who serves as an executive producer on the sequel.

Since its release, The Black Phone has garnered an 81% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes after 270 reviews. It has also made $161.4 million at the global box office against a $16–18 million budget and received multiple awards. This success on both critical and commercial fronts resulted in the studio greenlighting the sequel.

Not much is known about the plot of The Black Phone 2, or the character Bichir plays in it. Derrickson, Cargill, and Blumhouse‘s Jason Blum are producing The Black Phone 2, which premieres in US theaters on October 17, 2025.
