The Chicago Sky have reportedly fired head coach Teresa Weatherspoon after just one season. The decision has sparked widespread reactions, especially among fans and players. Now, many are wondering whether the reports are true.

Here is more about why the Chicago Sky fired coach Teresa Weatherspoon.

Was Teresa Weatherspoon fired by Chicago Sky?

The Chicago Sky have fired head coach Teresa Weatherspoon after just one season. However, there has been no official confirmation till now. This decision follows a challenging year in which the Sky finished with a 13-27 record and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2018.

Weatherspoon was appointed head coach on October 12 and faced difficulty guiding a team undergoing a rebuild after their 2021 championship run. Despite having a promising rookie star in Angel Reese, who averaged 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds while setting a WNBA record with 15 consecutive double-doubles, the team struggled significantly, especially in the latter part of the season with a dismal 3-13 record after the Olympic break. The injury to Reese on September 7 further hampered the team’s prospects.

Following the reports of Weatherspoon’s firing, Reese expressed her appreciation for the coach on social media, highlighting the personal and professional impact Weatherspoon had on her during a crucial time in her career. Reese described Weatherspoon as an “unsung hero,” acknowledging her support and belief in her abilities. (via ABC News )

The Sky faced additional challenges beyond their record. This includes possessing the second-worst offense in the league and struggling in late-game scenarios. Roster mismanagement also contributed to their difficulties, with key players like All-Star guard Kahleah Copper traded before Weatherspoon’s arrival. Furthermore, injuries plagued the team, affecting their overall performance.

With this firing, the Sky are now tasked with finding their third head coach in as many seasons. This adds a considerable challenge to an already busy offseason. The team has only two players, Moriah Jefferson and Rachel Banham, under guaranteed contracts for the 2025 season.
