Netflix is currently developing a Pride film after successfully acquiring the rights to Ibi Zoboi’s 2018 coming-of-age novel of the same name. It is described as a modern retelling of Jane Austen’s classic Pride & Prejudice novel.

This comes after it was recently reported that the streamer has also started developing a new Pride & Prejudice series from Dolly Alderton. Prior to the upcoming project, Austen’s novel was famously adapted in 1995 with Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen leading the film’s cast as Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy, respectively.

What is the Pride movie about?

“Set in the gentrifying Bushwick area of Brooklyn, NY, Pride centers on Afro-Latina teen Zuri Benitez who fights to preserve her neighborhood and manage family chaos,” reads the synopsis. “But when the wealthy Darcy family moves in next door, Zuri’s disdain for the arrogant Darius Darcy turns into an unexpected connection that forces her to reconsider everything she thought she knew about pride, prejudice, and home.”

The Pride movie is being written by Karen Joseph Adcock. Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground is set to produce alongside Leslie Morgenstein, Elysa Koplovitz, Vinnie Malhotra, Anikah McLaren, and Mark Wright. It is a production by Alloy Entertainment, Higher Ground Productions, and Netflix.
