God of War TV Series Starts Over After EPs & Showrunner Depart

The God of War television series adaptation is going back to square one.

It was announced in 2022 that Prime Video had officially ordered a God of War live-action television series based on PlayStation‘s popular video game of the same name. The series will reportedly revolve around the titular character, also known as Kratos.

However, Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios are starting again from scratch now following showrunner/executive producer Rafe Judkins (Wheel of Time) and fellow executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus exited the project after completing scripts for the planned first season.

Why did the EPs and showrunner exit the God of War TV Series?

Per Deadline’s report, the previously attached showrunner and executive producers have left the project as the studios are planning to venture in a “different creative direction.” This is despite the scripts for Season 1 receiving praise from both Sony and Prime, according to a source close to the outlet.

The studios are reportedly planning to hire new showrunners and writers for the God of War TV series. The remaining executive producers for the project include Cory Barlog, Yumi Yang, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Yumi Land, and Roy Lee.

The video game franchise, which PlayStation first introduced in 2005, spans multiple games including God of War: Betrayal, God of War: Chains of Olympus, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, God of War: A Call from the Wilds, and God of War Ragnarök, among others.

Per Amazon’s description (via Deadline), the show will follow Kratos, who, “after exiling himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece, hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard. When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son Atreus to spread her ashes from the highest peak — his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”
