RB Aikens and Associates, the developer behind the Five & Main retail lifestyle center in Commerce Township, has started infrastructure work on entrances, access roads, water, sewers, and electric for both the commercial and residential elements of the project.

The development is located at the northeast intersection of Pontiac Trail and Martin Parkway (south of Martin is M-5) and will include shopping, dining, and entertainment. Construction of the commercial spaces is slated to begin in the spring of 2025.

“We are excited to take this critical step in the development of Five & Main,” says Bruce Aikens, developer at RB Aikens and Associates in Birmingham. “Our team is dedicated to bringing a dynamic, community-centric experience to life, and starting the infrastructure work is a key part of making this vision a reality. We look forward to seeing the commercial area evolve and become a cornerstone of the community.”

The Five & Main development occupies approximately 45 acres of land and is anticipated to be a roughly 275,000-square-foot lifestyle center space akin to The Village of Rochester Hills development that Aikens owns at the northeast corner of Adams Road and Walton Boulevard. The Five & Main walkable town center will include restaurants, shopping, entertainment, and residential communities.

In tandem with Five & Main, Continental Properties has announced the groundbreaking of Springs at Five & Main, an upscale garden-style residential community designed for those seeking a blend of comfort, convenience, and modern living. The community will offer 300 “premium” apartment homes featuring private ground-level entrances and optional attached garages.

“We are delighted to bring Springs at Five & Main to this thriving area,” says Heather Riggs, vice president of multifamily operations at Continental Properties in Columbus, Ohio. “This community is designed with the modern resident in mind, offering a variety of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments that cater to diverse lifestyles. The walkable layout and high-end amenities will provide residents with a unique living experience in the heart of a vibrant neighborhood.”

Springs at Five & Main will allow residents to easily access the retail, dining, and recreational opportunities at Five & Main. Residents will have convenient access via M-5 to the I-696/I-275 interchange and Walled Lake Consolidated School District, along with nearby recreational amenities. Pre-leasing for Springs at Five & Main will begin in the spring of 2025.

“Commerce Township and the Commerce Downtown Development Authority (DDA) are very excited that the infrastructure work has begun on the commercial element of Five & Main in advance of the construction of the lifestyle center,” says Larry Gray, Commerce Township Supervisor.  “That along with the groundbreaking of Springs at Five & Main on the residential side of this development, marks a very exciting time for Commerce Township.”

The entire development was assembled and marketed by InSite Commercial in Commerce Township on behalf of the township.

“We took two former golf courses and redeveloped everything to bring in new housing, retail, entertainment, and offices for Commerce Township,” says Randy Thomas, president and CEO of InSite Commercial. “The development also is truly walkable.

“We look forward to Five & Main and the Springs at Five & Main at the northeast corner of Pontiac Trail and Martin Parkway, as well as LaFontaine Automotive Group adding dealerships for Hyundai and Genesis at the northwest corner. There’s more to come.”

Continental Properties is a national developer and operator of rental communities, retail, and hospitality properties. Since its inception in 1979, Continental Properties has developed more than 129 apartment communities encompassing more than 34,000 apartment homes in 19 states.
