GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Normally you wouldn’t hear the words “Angel Tree” until closer to the holiday season, but this year, the Kent County Salvation Army is getting a jump start on its toy collection by partnering with the West Michigan Whitecaps.

The nonprofit and the Whitecaps will celebrate Christmas in July on Thursday, July 25, at 6:30 p.m. Game attendees are encouraged to bring a new board game, card game or puzzle to donate to Angel Tree. In exchange, they will receive $2 off the ticket price.

The ticket must be purchased at the stadium on game day. Angel Tree collection bins will be placed outside of the stadium entrances.

The Salvation Army said as part of the Christmas in July celebration, the national anthem will be performed by the Salvation Army Brass Band and the first pitch will be thrown by Salvation Army Advisory Chairman Steve Watkins.

The Angel Tree program served over 6,000 individuals, including nearly 4,000 children, in 2023, according to the Salvation Army, which noted the program has seen an increase in those needing assistance over the past two years. The Angel Tree program provides Christmas gifts and cards to children and seniors throughout Kent County each year.
