COMSTOCK TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Deputies say a 5-year-old was hospitalized with critical injuries after a crash in Comstock Township.

It happened around 2:05 p.m. Saturday at South Sprinkle Road and Lake Street/Comstock Avenue, according to a release from the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators say a car was heading east on Lake Street when it ignored the red light at South Sprinkle Road, went through the intersection and was hit by a northbound car, which had the right of way.

According to the sheriff’s office, there were three people inside the eastbound car: a driver, an adult passenger and a 5-year-old child. Deputies say the child suffered critical injuries and was taken to the hospital, while the driver and adult passenger are being treated for minor injuries.

The driver of the northbound car suffered minor injuries, the release says.

Investigators believe speed played a role in the crash.

Deputies continue to investigate. If you saw the crash or have any information, you’re asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 269.383.8748 or Silent Observer at 269.343.2100.
