Police looking for man after reckless high-speed chase in Grand Island
GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Grand Island Police are looking for an Alda man after they say he fled from officers and drove recklessly with his son in the car on Friday. Grand Island Police said officers spotted 37-year-old Don Casey Casares with fictitious plates at the Super Saver on West 2nd Street and attempted to stop him.

Man seriously injured after crashing into tree in central Lincoln, police say
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - A 20-year-old man was seriously injured after crashing into a tree near the Lincoln Children’s Zoo early Monday morning, police said. Lincoln Police officers responded to a crash near the intersection of Capital Parkway and A Street just after 1 a.m. and found that the male driver had crashed into a nearby tree.
Grass fire near Cozad exit on I-80 has been put out
Cozad, Neb. - A grass fire is taking place in the median on I-80 near Cozad just shortly after 11:00 Monday morning. According to Nebraska 511, between MM 219 and Exit 222, drivers should be aware of a grass fire that's happening in the median near the I-80 eastbound lanes outside of Cozad. The left shoulder is closed, and drivers should stay in the right lane as crews work on the fire.

Construction Started on $163 Million Downtown Project
NuStyle Development has started construction on The Duo, a $163 million project that will convert the Central Park Plaza twin towers downtown into 700 apartments. NuStyle is renovating the buildings in three phases with final completion occurring in 2027. Sullivan’s Steakhouse will remain in the south tower. The old Park Fair Mall — on the west side of the complex along 16th Street — will be torn down and replaced with a city-owned parking garage. Some of the apartments (150 units) will be constructed on top of that new garage. Currently, workers are doing interior demolition inside the south tower and getting ready to tear down the old mall.
City officials close Beatrice park restroom, following fireworks damage
BEATRICE – The City of Beatrice has closed a public park restroom, after it was damaged by vandals. A police sergeant responding to the park Friday morning found that a toilet had been blown up by fireworks, shattered into several pieces. A spent six-inch firework casing was found nearby.

Top athlete in 2026 to visit Nebraska later this month
One of the top athletes in the class of 2026 will visit the Nebraska Cornhuskers later this month. Brandon Arrington is a cornerback/wide receiver from Mount Miguel High School out of Spring Valley, California. Arrington will visit Oklahoma on July 26th, Nebraska on July 27th, and Alabama on July 28th. During his Sophomore season, he made 14 receptions for 310 yards and four touchdowns. He also recorded 25 tackles on the year. Arrington is also an accomplished sprinter, recording times of 10.43 in the 100-meter dash and 20.76 in the 200-meter dash. According to three of the four primary recruiting services, the recruit is currently ranked as the No. 1 athlete in the class of 2026.
